Social Control and Cults
What is Social Control
Social control means the enforcement of conformity by society upon its members, either by law or by social pressure. It basically gained through institutional, economic, and social structures. Societies cannot function without an agreed upon and enforced social order that makes daily life possible. Without it, chaos and confusion would reign.
“Change yourself – you are in control.”
— Mahatma Gandhi
Its mean you have to take control of the situations. You’re completely in charge. Take responsibility for your actions and reactions. Don’t wait for the situation to be control or change itself. Just adapt yourself whenever it feels legitimate. Social control tends to take two forms: informal or formal. Informal social control is in social situations. They are the unspoken rules that are brought upon us as we act in society. These include sarcasm, criticism, neighbor watching, and just showing any immediate reaction to any situation. And Formal Social Control is when the official leader of a country controls the society. It exists because of legislation and what carried out by law enforcement.
A term Cult
Though use of the word “cult” is somewhat controversial, but cults did not fade away by the passing of the 1960s & 70s, when they were first introduced in different places around the world for their growing presence and sometimes controversial practices and activities. Recently, cult groups and relationships are thriving, though many of the long standing groups have matured and claim to have discontinued some of their more questionable behaviors. If there is less overt street and stranger recruitment today, it is because many cults now use professional associations, campus organizations, self help seminars, and the Internet as their main recruiting ground.
Consequently, cults are well known for manipulating or attempting to limit or completely cut off your relationships with others outside the organization. Communication with family members, friends, even coworkers, discourage for fear that these groups could influence the victim’s way of thinking or worse, discourage the victim’s continued participation. Information, such as media or music, from the outside elicits similar reactions. As a general rule, what you do on your own time. Aside from general concern for your wellbeing (a sports coach who tells his players to avoid tobacco, for example) few organization should exert control on your outside life.
Moreover, people associate cults with brainwashing, manipulation etc. But remember, when helping a victim you are talking to a person. Then, a person slowly, over time, became very committed to a cause, organization or single individual. There are plenty of negative characteristics to associate with cult leaders, but no one can deny the likes of Jim Jones or David Koresh were extremely charismatic individuals who had great success drawing people to them and their respective causes.
Conclusion by Society
In a nutshell, it is mandatory to be reassuring and non judgmental in such exit counseling sessions, as there is a good chance one aspect of the cults initiation program was instilling a distrust of all outsiders. But still there are no guarantees. Some studies suggest that more than one third of deprogramming or reintegration’s fail. And those that do succeed face a long list of new challenges that must be overcome back in the real world. Hence, it’s essential to identify signs of cult oriented of predatory behavior up front.
