Self-worth simply expressed as the level of importance you give to yourself and confidence makes it highly positive factor in life as it directly correlated with self contentment, good mental health and achievements. Self-worth is a fundamental part of our being, and it controls the way we see ourselves.
Everything we think about, all the emotions we feel, and even the way we act is a product of what value we place on ourselves by ourselves. Though, self-esteem is often used as a synonym for self-worth. Dr. Lisa Firestone believes that self-worth should be less about measuring yourself based on external actions and more about valuing your inherent worth as a person. In other words, self-worth is about who you are, not what you are.
The fundamental premise of the self-worth is that various factors influence one’s sense of self worth. Its basic assumption is that;
“One’s sense of worth depends heavily on one’s accomplishments.”
This implies that unless a person is, or can become, successful at some valuable position. However, the fact that performance is not the only path to self-worth implies that it might also be referred from one’s perception of their own ability or through the efforts of hard work. As Covington put it in general terms, “human beings tend to embrace success no matter how it occurs”, but there are exceptions.
Sometimes, people will discard credit for their achievements if they feel they cannot repeat them. Also, success concluding from remedial assistance is not always valued in the same way that successes based solely on one’s own efforts are.
Self worth is not about your accomplishments, grades, career, your love life, your health status, your finances and related to your preferences. It can be somewhat overwhelming to see yourself for who “you surely are” without the assets, desires and companions. The best thing about recognizing self-worth is seeing the practical impact it has on your behavior.
Self-worth affects the things you do and the choices you make consciously. You start rejecting anything that has a negative effect on your life, and you become more open to things crafted to make you a better person. Self-worth is what keeps you satisfied even if all your achievements, assets, and possessions are taken away from you. The moment you reach healthy levels of self-worth, life becomes much more meaningful.
Consequently, there are number of reasons which make us sure that self worth is really essential for happiness and health. It helps us to create personal boundaries, to be authentic, to be honest with ourselves, to be confident, encourage us to make wise decisions, finding the meaning of life, improves the quality of life, removes the toxic people and habits of life and force you to respect yourself.
Howbeit, by challenging your critical inner voice and stopping comparing yourself to others, you can begin to get a feeling for your own self-worth. By pursuing activities that are meaningful to you and acting in line with your own personal beliefs, you can develop your sense of yourself as a worthwhile person in the world even further.
